Free Photoshop book!

14 May, 2008 (19:06) | Photoshop | By: Butch

Just a quickie here, and then I need to get back to work: For the next 30 days, Sitepoint is giving away PDF copies of The Photoshop Anthology. I just downloaded this, and it’s a damn fine Photoshop book, particularly for the price! Check it out!

On this day…

19 February, 2008 (15:29) | Photoshop | By: Butch

On Feb. 19, 1990, Photoshop 1.0 shipped! Folks over at PhotoshopNews.com have shared their “where were you when” stories. Me? I was in college at the time, attending the University of Oklahoma. I had just switched over from pursuing a degree in architecture to a BFA in graphic design. It would still be a couple of years before I was really exposed to it, though, as I was still deeply into a lot of other traditional fine arts courses like painting and life drawing at the time. The most important of which was probably my painting class, because that’s where I met my wife… and as it so happens, February of 1990 is when we first started dating. So on this day in 1990, I can say with a reasonable amount of accuracy that if I wasn’t with her I was certainly thinking about her!

Photoshop 1.0 wasn’t even a blip on my radar, funnily enough; 2.0 was where I first jumped on board, and 3.0 was the first copy my wife and I purchased. We still have it in the original box.

Creating Folds & Creases in Photoshop

1 February, 2008 (15:32) | Photoshop | By: Butch

Corey Barker, the Photoshop Laddie, has a tutorial up at Planet Photoshop on how to create folds and creases in an image. In this case he used a map, so naturally I glommed right on to it, but of course you can use it for other things to. (But why would you?)

Now that 10 Towns & Villages is out, I’ve started working on 10 Cities. Here’s a quick screenshot of the work in progress!

FCAP #17

FCAP #17: Show Notes

  • Sorry it’s been so long since I put up a new episode, folks. It’s been crazy at Casa del Zombie.
  • The map pack I’m working on is a collection of 10 generic town and village maps. The maps are all completely unlabeled – no compass rose even! – and are presented as high-res JPG’s. You’ll be able to print them out, edit, and label them however you want to suit your campaign.
  • If you’re shopping around for an older, less expensive version of Photoshop, version 7 is the oldest I’d recommend. It’s a real watershed in the development of the program; 7.0 introduced the new brush engine, which – as you can see from this episode – is almost worth the price of admission all on it’s own.
  • Even if you have a Wacom tablet, this is still a useful technique to learn. Drawing all those ridge lines over and over again, I would’ve ended up with some serious carpal tunnel syndrome doing it the old fashioned way!
  • This is totally unrelated to Photoshop, but I have to mention it anyway as it’s zombie-related. The trailer for George Romero’s new movie Diary of the Dead is up at YouTube, and it will have all the true zombie fans drooling.
